เรื่องราวในยุค 70 แลร์รี่ ด็อค สปอร์ตเทลโล นักสืบขี้ยาแห่งลอสแองเจลิส ต้องเจอกับเรื่องคาดไม่ถึงเมื่อ ชาลต้า แฟนเก่าที่เขาได้มาขอความเชื่อเหลือ เรื่องมีอยู่ว่า มิคกี้ วูล์ฟแมน แฟนใหม่ของเธอที่เป็นมหาเศรษฐีกำลังจะโดนภรรยาของเขากับชู้รักจับเขาเข้าโรงพยาบาลบ้า แต่แล้วชาลต้าและมิคกี้หายตัวไปพร้อมกัน ด็อคจึงต้องออกตามหาทั้งคู่ในเมืองริมชายหาดแคริฟอร์เนีย ที่ๆทำให้เขาพบกับสารพัดคนเพี้ยน ทั้งนักโต้คลื่น โสเภณี ขี้ยา พวกขาร็อค ตำรวจแอลเอ และอีกมาก
